Rhyming Words Activity
Students compete in groups to brainstorm and write rhyming words. The group with the most correct words is the winner.
Time: 20 minutes
Ask the students to get into 4 or 5 groups.
Explain the meaning of ‘rhyming words’ to the students.
Rhyming Words: Two words that have the same ending sound.
For example: Man, ban, can, Dan, fan, pan, tan, van
Ask the students to number each person in the group.
Ask Student #1 from each group to go to the board.
Say a ‘base word’. Students at the board have two minutes to write words that rhyme with the base word. They should try to write as many words as possible.
Possible Base Words:
At the end of the two minutes, ask the students to sit down, and check all the words together as a class. Groups can get one point for each correct rhyming word.
Continue until all the students have had a chance to go to the board.
The winner is the group with the most points.
Remind the students that rhyming words may not always have similar spelling.
Show examples of rhyming words in the lyrics of music.
