Giving Support

Giving Support

Students look through newspapers and magazines to find opinions, reasons, and types of support. An ESL debate activity practicing giving support for opinions.

Level:  Advanced

Topic:  Debate

Time:  45 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Handout for each student.
  • Newspapers, magazines, or internet access.

Procedure

Give each student the Handout about Giving Support. Read the Handout together as a class, and answer any questions.

Ask students to get a partner. Pass out the newspapers and magazines to each pair of students.

Ask students to look through the articles. Their task is to find an opinion, reason, and support. Then, label the support as an example, an explanation, an expert opinion, or a statistic. Allow students around 10 minutes to prepare.

Draw 4 columns on the board, and label them opinion, reason, support, and type of support.

Expert Opinion

Statistic

Ask one pair of students to go to the front of the classroom and present their findings. One student speaks while the other student fills in columns 1 – 3 on the board.

Then, ask the remaining students to guess the type of support and fill in column 4.

Continue until each pair of students has had a chance to present.

Notes:

It’s best to do this activity after the activities Giving Opinions and Giving Reasons.
