Informative Impromptu Speech
Students prepare and deliver an informative impromptu speech about a topic of their choice. Includes sample ESL speech topics and peer evaluation form.
Topic: Informative speech
Time: 30 minutes
- Make one copy of the Impromptu Speech Topics for each student.
- Make one copy of the Peer Evaluation Form for each student.
Explain assignment: Students will give a short 1-minute informative speech.
Informative: Tell the audience about something.
Impromptu: Little to no preparation.
Pass out the Impromptu Speech Topics handout to each student. Ask students to choose a topic from the list.
Give students around 5 minutes to prepare their speech. Students should not write the speech, but they can jot down notes of key words.
Pass out the Peer Evaluation Form to each student. The audience’s task is to watch each speech and give an evaluation. Speakers are evaluated on their posture, eye contact, gestures, and voice.
Ask the first student to go to the front of the classroom and give a 1-minute speech.
Continue with each student until all the students have had a chance to give a speech.
Collect all the evaluations. Spread them around the room for students to read.
