Featured Teacher - Matt Purland

Hi! My name is Matt Purland and I’m an English teacher and materials writer from Cambridge in the UK.

I currently live and work in Poland. I teach English to teenagers and adults in the classroom and online. I’ve been teaching English full-time since 2002. I started out teaching English to asylum seekers and refugees at a training centre in Derby, then worked with economic migrants from the new European Union countries, such as Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland, before moving to Poland in 2007.

I love teaching English because no two lessons are the same! I avoid using the course book in my lessons, preferring to let them be led by the students’ needs.

Big Grammar Book

In 2002 I started a popular English language teaching resource website and I continued to run it until 2016, when I sold the business. During that period I wrote literally thousands of printable worksheets for students and teachers of English and put them all up on the website for free download. I also researched and wrote 24 books of resources, including Big Grammar Book, which has been downloaded millions of times. All of those materials are in the public domain and available from a wide variety of online sources.

These days I still write materials and my efforts are focused on my latest website and business venture Purland Training.
