Superstitions

Students use the first conditional to discuss American superstitions and compare them to their own country's superstitions.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Superstitions

Grammar:  First Conditional

Time:  20 minutes

Preparation

  • Make a copy of the Handout for each student in the class.

Procedure

1

Students get into groups of 4 or 5 people.

Give each student a Handout.

Ask the students to read the superstitions in their groups and decide which ones are similar to their culture and which ones are different.

Ask one group at a time to give a report about one of the superstitions.

Ask the students to brainstorm at least five superstitions that are present in their culture. Remind students to use the first conditional.

Go around the room, one group at a time, presenting one superstition for each group.

7

When a group cannot think of an additional superstition, they are out.

The winner is the last remaining group.
