Let's Travel America

Let's Travel America

Students role play a one week trip to the United States. They have 2000 USD to travel America. They must compare costs and not go over the budget.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Travel

Time:  90 minutes

  • Prepare information cards about 8 popular cities or use Handout A with ready made cards.
  • Make one copy of Handout B, Travel Costs, for each group.

Ask the students to brainstorm how much things cost in the US (i.e., average hotel, rural area hotel, city hotel, camp or hostel, gas, tipping, fast food, restaurant, etc.)

Elicit student ideas and give correct answers. Pass out Handout B, Travel Costs, to each group.

Put the students into 8 groups. Write the 8 chosen cities on the board.

Ask the groups to decide which city they would like to visit.

Pass out the city information cards, or Handout A, to the groups. Each group should receive information about one city.

Explain the role-play:

You and your group members are going to travel America for 6 nights, 7 days. As a group, you have $2,000 USD. Plan a travel itinerary for your week in the US. Where will you go? What will you do? What will you see? What will you eat?

Afterwards, ask each group to report back to the class about their city and their travel plan.

Extended Practice

Students have a discussion about which city they would like to visit, based on the presentations.
