ESL Shopping Role play

ESL Shopping Role play

Students brainstorm shopping phrases and use a handout to create a shopping role play.

Level:  Elementary

Topic:  Shopping

Time:  30 minutes

  • Make one copy of the handout for each student.

Ask the students to brainstorm shopping phrases.

Elicit phrases from the students and write them on the board under Clerk and Customer.

Give each student a handout and ask students to get a partner.

Students practice the role play with their partner. Then switch roles and practice again.

Ask the students to find something in their bag to sell (e.g., cell phone, textbook, jacket, pens, pen case, desk, bag, etc.).

Ask the students to practice the role play again and use the new item.

Ask a few pairs of students to go to the front of the room and perform their role play.

Extended Practice

  • Ask the students to get into groups of 4 to 5 people.
  • Tell half the groups that they will be the customers. The customers walk around, go to the shops, and try to buy something using the phrases on the handout.
  • Then, trade places. The clerks become the customers and the customers become the clerks.

This is the simplest and most effective shopping role play activity I can find. It gets the students interacting with each other while giving them a safety net to fall back on. I did one thing different -> I edited the hand out to be a gap fill. Then had the class brain storm more terms.
