Friends: The One With The Routine

Students learn new expressions from an episode of the Friends TV show. Topics include the Christmas holiday and New Year's Eve in America.

Level:  Advanced

Topic:  Christmas, New Year's Eve

Time:  60 minutes


  • Friends TV show: Season 6, Episode 10, The One With The Routine
  • Make one copy of the Handout for each student in the class.
  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.
  • OptionalFriends Script

Procedure below is the same for all Friends activities



Ask the students to work in groups of 3 to 5 people.


Give each student a handout.


Explain the Expression of the day on the handout.


Ask the students to read the Useful Expressions and discuss the meaning of the expressions in their groups. Check the answers as a whole class.


Review the Video Listening questions.


Play the Friends episode. The students’ task is to listen for the Useful Expressions and answer the Video Listening questions.


After watching, ask the students if they could recognize and understand the Useful Expressions in the video.


Ask the students to discuss their answers to the Video Listening questions in their groups. Check the answers as a whole class.


Then, ask the students to discuss the Discussion Questions in their group. Monitor for correct usage of the Useful Expressions.

Extended Practice

Ask students to write their own sentences or a dialogue using the Useful Expressions.

Ask students to write a response to one of the Discussion Questions.
