You Might Be... Charades

You Might Be... Charades

Students act out an activity from a topic card. Team members try to guess what the student is doing. A charades speaking activity using modal verbs.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Daily activities

Grammar:  Modal Verbs

Time:  20 minutes

  • Make one copy of the Communication Cards, and cut as indicated.
  • Write on the board:

A: What am I doing?

B: You must/might/could/may be ______ + ing.

Divide students into two groups.

Ask students to number each person in their group.

Ask Student #1 from each group to stand up and go outside the room. Show them an activity from the Conversation Cards.

Student #1 returns to his or her group and mimes the action. The other students in the group try to guess the activity by using modal verbs.

For example:

Student #1: What am I doing?

Everyone in the group: You might be watching a movie.

The first group to guess correctly gets a point. Keeps track of points on the board.

Continue with Student #2, and so on until each student has had a chance to mime an action from the cards.

The group with the most points is the winner.
