Green Christmas

Students listen to the song, Green Christmas, and correct the words. A listening activity practicing rhyming words.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Christmas

Time:  20 minutes


  • Make one copy of the Handout for each student.
  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.
  • MP3 – Green Christmas by the Barenaked Ladies



Give one copy of the Handout to each student.


Review the meaning of rhyming words.

Rhyming Words: Two words that have the same ending sound. 

For example: man, ban, can, Dan, fan, pan, tan, van.


Explain to the students that there are a lot of words on the handout that are incorrect. The incorrect words rhyme with the original words. Ask students to look at the title of the song as an example.

For example: 

BNL Sings Clean Christmas (incorrect)

BNL Sings Green Christmas (correct)


Play the song 2x. The students’ task is to listen and find the words that are wrong and replace them with the correct words.

Hint: There are 25 incorrect words, not including the title.


Elicit correct answers from the students.


Listen again to check answers.
