Giving Opinions

Students discuss debate topics and create their own. An ESL debate activity practicing giving opinions and agreeing and disagreeing.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Debate

Time:  45 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Debate Topics Handout for each group.
  • Make one copy of the Giving Opinions Handout for each student.

Procedure

Put students into groups.

Pass out the Debate Topics Handout to each group, and pass out the Giving Opinions Handout to each student.

Review the language for giving opinions and agreeing and disagreeing from the Handout.

Ask students to discuss the Debate Topics on the other Handout in their groups and to choose their top 3. Remind students to use the language for giving opinions and agreeing and disagreeing during their discusssion.

Then, ask the students to create 2 additional debate topics. Again, remind students to use the language for giving opinions and agreeing and disagreeing during their discussion.

Ask one student from each group to go to the front of the classroom and write the group’s 2 debate topics on the board.

Randomly call on a student to give his or her opinion about one of the topics on the board. Randomly call on another student to agree or disagree with the previous student’s opinion.

8

Continue until all the topics have been discussed.
