Give A Reason Because

Give A Reason Because

Students write reasons for sentences on the board. They work in teams to quickly think of reasons beginning with "because". An ESL writing warmer to practice giving reasons.

Level:  Any

Topic:  Warmer

Time:  20 minutes

  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.

Students get into two groups. The two groups should have an equal number of students.

For unequal numbers, pair up two students to work together.

Ask students to make a line facing the board.

Write the first sentence from the Key on the board for each team (the same sentence is fine for both teams). The students’ task is to give a reason for the sentence, and write it under the sentence. They must start their sentence with "because".

For example:

I like cats.

Because they are playful.

Because they sleep all day.

Because they are tired.

The students at the front of the line write their sentence and then go to the back of the line. Continue until each student has written a sentence on the board.

The first group to finish gets a point.

Play again starting with the next sentence from the Key.

The group with the most points is the winner.

Extended Practice

After each round, ask the students to check the sentences on the board for errors. Review the errors together as a class.
