Brainstorming ESL Writing  Topics

Students brainstorm ESL writing topics by writing as many words as possible for one minute about given topics. An ESL essay writing activity for students of all levels.

Level:  Any

Topic:  Essay Writing

Time:  20 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Handout for each student.

Procedure

1

Give each student a Handout.

Write the first topic on the board. Ask students to write the topic at the top of one of the boxes on their Handout.


Suggested Topics:

Travel

Interests

Friends

School

Job

Future

Give students 1 minute to write as many words as possible about the topic in the box below the topic.

Continue with each suggested topic until students have completed all 6 boxes on the Handout.

Then, ask students to choose their top 5 words on the Handout and circle them.

Ask students to get a partner and share their top 5 words.

Finally, students choose their top word and write it at the top of the Handout.

Extended Practice

Ask students to write an opinion sentence using their top word. Start the sentence with, “I think …”
