ESL Buzz Game

ESL Buzz Game

ESL warmer where students have to think on their feet while counting, multiplying, and speaking in English.

Level:  Any

Topic:  Warmer

Time:  20 minutes

Preparation

None.

Procedure

1

Ask students to stand in a circle. Explain to the students that this is a counting game. Ask them to count off in order, starting with 1 and stopping with the last person in the circle.

2

Next, explain that you are going to add a rule to the game. They are not allowed to say 7 or any other number that contains a 7 (i.e., 7, 17, 27, 37, etc.). Instead they need to say, "Buzz". Try a few rounds.

For Example:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Buzz, 8, etc.

3

Once the students are used to this rule, stop them, and explain that you are adding another rule. In addition to not being allowed to say any number with a 7, they may not say any number with a multiple of 7 either (i.e., 7, 14, 17, 21, 27, 28, 35, 37, etc.). Instead they need to say, "Buzz". Try a few rounds.

For Example:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Buzz, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, Buzz, 15, etc.

4

Now, add a third rule to the game. In addition to not being allowed to say any number with a 7 or any number with a multiple of 7, they can not say any double numbers (i.e., 11, 22, 33, etc.) Instead they need to say, "Buzz". Try a few rounds.

For Example:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Buzz, 8, 9, 10, Buzz, 12, 13, Buzz, 15, etc.

5

Explain that you are going to add one final rule. Every time someone says, "Buzz", the direction of the counting changes (i.e., clockwise to counter-clockwise). Try a few rounds. Note: This gets tricky around the numbers 21, 22 and 27, 28.

For Example:

Clockwise: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, Buzz

Counter-clockwise: 8, 9, 10, Buzz

Clockwise: 12, 13, Buzz

Counter-clockwise: 15, etc.

6

Lastly, explain the final round. If anyone forgets a directional change, takes too long, or forgets to say the word "Buzz", then they are out and must sit down. The next student in the circle starts the game again with number 1.

7

Continue the game until there is only one student standing. The last student standing is the winner.
