What Was Happening?

Students find a picture in a magazine and imagine what was happening when the photographer took the picture. A speaking activity using the past continuous.

Level:  Intermediate

Grammar:  Past continuous

Time:  30 minutes

Preparation

  • Collect a variety of magazines.

Procedure

Students get into groups of 4 or 5 people.

Give each group several magazines.

Ask the students to choose an interesting picture from one of the magazines.

As a group, students imagine what was happening when the photographer took the picture. Ask the students to create a story about the picture using the past continuous.

Ask each group to present their story to the class.
