If I Were You

If I Were You

Students give advice using - If I were you... - and a topic from a card. A speaking activity using the second conditional.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Advice

Grammar:  Second Conditional

Time:  30 minutes

  • Make one copy of the Conversation Cards for each group, and cut as indicated.

Students get into groups of 4 or 5 people.

Give one set of Conversation Cards to each group, and ask the students to put the cards in a pile face down.

Ask the students to take turns taking a card from the pile, reading the card, and receiving advice from the other students in the group. Their task is to choose the best advice. The student who gave the best advice gets a point.

For example:

If I were you, I would...

Continue until there are not any cards remaining. The winner is the student with the most points.

Extended Practice

Give each student an index card. Ask the students to think of an unlikely problem and write it on the index card. Collect the cards and redistribute them to the groups. Use the students’ cards instead of the conversation cards.
