Brainstorming ESL Essay Writing  Topics

Students brainstorm ESL essay writing topics by writing their opinion about given topics for one minute. An essay writing activity for students of all levels.

Level:  Any

Topic:  Essay Writing

Time:  20 minutes

Preparation

  • None.

Procedure

Ask students to get a sheet of paper and write, “I think that…” at the top of the paper.

Write the first topic on the board. Ask students to write a sentence stating their opinion about the topic on their paper. Start the sentence with “I think that…” Give students 1 minute to write their sentence.


Suggested Topics:

Money

School

Job

Sports

Health

People

Travel

World

Continue with each topic until students have written one sentence for each.

Then, ask students to choose the sentence they like the most, and write it again on the back of the paper.

Now, ask students to think of reasons why they believe this sentence is true. Have students write as many reasons as possible using, “because…”

Finally, students choose their favorite 2 or 3 reasons.

Ask students to make one long sentence starting with the opinion and followed by the reasons. Cross out “I think that,” and this is the topic for their essay!
