Homophones Game

Homophones Game

Students try to guess the correct homophone by listening to the description of two words. An ESL vocabulary activity using homophones.

Level:  Intermediate

Grammar:  Homonyms

Time:  20 minutes

  • Make one copy of the Conversation Cards for each group, and cut as indicated.

Explain the usage of homophones. Homophones are words that have the same pronunciation but a different spelling and a different meaning.

For example:

Big star (sun)

Male child (son)

Students get into groups of 4 or 5 people.

Give one set of conversation cards to each group, and ask the students to put the cards in a pile face down.

Ask the students to take turns taking a card from the pile, reading out the two clues, and waiting for a member of the group to guess the correct homophones.

The first student in the group to correctly answer can take the card.

Continue until there are not any cards remaining.

The winner in each group is the student with the most cards.
