When Was The Last Time You?

Students finish the question, When was the last time you...?  with a word from a card. Students play the card game with a partner to practice the past simple.

Level:  Elementary

Topic:  Daily activities

Grammar:  Past simple

Time:  20 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Conversation Cards, and cut as indicated.
  • Write on the board:  

When was the last time you…?

The last time I...

Procedure

1

Give a Conversation Card to each student.

Ask the students to make a question using the prompt on the board and the word on their card. Remind students to change the verb tense on their card to the past simple.  


For example: get up early

When was the last time you got up early?

Students stand up and get a partner. The two student ask and answer their question.


For example: get up early

The last time I got up early was yesterday. I got up at 5:00am.

4

The two students exchange cards and find new partners. Continue for 5-10 minutes.

Extended Practice

As a whole class, randomly ask a few students the questions from the cards.
