Students talk about future plans and hopes using conversation cards.

Level:  Elementary

Topic:  Future

Grammar:  Going to

Time:  40 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Conversation Cards for each group.

Procedure

Review grammar for plans and goals.


Plans:

I am going to

I am planning to

 

Hopes and Goals:

I want to

I hope to

I would like to

  • am going to France. A future plan that is going to happen. It is possible that the person has already bought a plane ticket and/or arranged the details of the trip.
  • want to go to France. A hope or goal that may happen in the distant future. The person probably hasn’t decided on dates or the specifics of the trip.

Draw the following figure on the board. Ask the students to think about their plans and goals and fill in the boxes in the figure.

                                                    PLANS

Tonight

Next week

Next year             

10 years in the future

                                                                   HOPES / GOALS

Students get a partner, and ask their partner about their plans and goals.


For example:

A:  What are your plans for next week?

B:  I am planning to go to France.

Ask the students to get into groups of 4 or 5 people.

Give each group a set of Conversation Cards and ask the students to put the cards face down.

The first student takes a card and asks the person on his or her right a question based on the information from the card. The student on the right answers the question. The remaining students should ask additional questions to get more information.


For example:

A: What are your plans for when you are old?

B:  I hope to live on a beach.

C:  What beach?

B:  I want to live on a beach in Thailand.

The next person takes a card and continues until all the cards have been used.
