Matching Opposites

Students review vocabulary by matching words with opposite meaning using a concentration board game.

Level:  Any

Topic:  Warmer

Grammar:  Opposites

Time:  15 minutes


  • Make one copy of Handout A, and number each word 1 – 16.
  • Write numbers 1 – 16 on the board in a square.

Divide the class into two teams. Ask the two teams to line up in front of the board.


Decide which team will go first. Ask the first person in the line to choose two numbers.


Tell the class the word for each number (from Handout A). Students must remember the word for each number. Their task is to match words that are opposites.


If a student makes a match, cross out the numbers on the board and give his or her team a point.


Continue until all numbers have been used. The team with the most points is the winner.
