Finish The Sentence

Finish The Sentence

Students finish the sentences on a handout to talk about events in the past that did not happen. A speaking activity using the third conditional.

Level:  Intermediate

Grammar:  Third Conditional

Time:  30 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Handout for each student.

Procedure

1

Give each student a Handout.

2

Ask the students to finish the sentences using the third conditional. Allow 5 - 10 minutes for students to write their answers.

For example:

If I had studied, I would have passed the test.

3

Students get a partner. The first person chooses a sentence on the Handout and says the second half of the sentence.

For example:

I would have passed the test.

4

The partner looks at the ten sentences and chooses the correct first half of the sentence. If the partner is correct, he or she gets a point.

For example:

If I had studied...

5

The students continue for the rest of the sentences. The student with the most points is the winner.
