Active Passive

Active Passive

Students compete against each other in this Active Passive activity to change active voice sentences into passive voice sentences. A speaking activity using passives.

Level:  Intermediate

Grammar:  Passives

Time:  20 minutes

Preparation

  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.

Procedure

1

Divide the class into two teams, and ask the teams to line up in front of the board.

2

Explain to the students that they will hear a sentence in the active voice (from the Key). The first person in each line compete to correctly change the active voice sentence into the passive voice.

For example:

Teacher: The ambulance awoke Terri (active).

Student: Terri was awoken by the ambulance (passive).

3

The first person to raise his or her hand can try first. If the student is correct, his or her team can get a point. If the student is incorrect, his or her team will get a negative point, and then the other team can try.

4

Continue until all the sentences have been used.

5

The team with the most points is the winner.
