Story Swap

Students summarize and tell a story. The students who listened to the story retell the story to a third person. The third person retells the story to a fourth person. A story swap speaking activity using passives.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Speaking activities

Grammar:  Passives

Time:  75 minutes

Preparation

  • Prepare four articles for the story swap and write a letter at the top of each one: A, B, C, D. BBC Learning English has a good selection of current topics.
  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.
  • Write the letters and names of the articles on the board.

Procedure

1

Students get into 4 groups.

2

Assign each group a letter: A, B, C, D.

3

Give each group an article (e.g., group A receives article A, and so on).

4

Students read the article and find all the passive structures.

5

Ask the students to write a summary on the handout. Remind students to use the passive voice.

6

Ask the students to retell the story in their groups without looking at the paper.

7

Collect the articles with the summaries.

8

Ask the students to stand up and get a partner from another group to tell the stories. Use the pairings from the Key. Write the partners on the board, like the Key, to avoid confusion.

9

At the end, students go back to their original groups and discuss one of the articles together.

Group A: Talk about D article.

Group B: Talk about C article.

Group C: Talk about B article.

Group D: Talk about A article.

10

Each group presents their summary to the class. Other groups can correct any mistakes.
