Rules Of America And The UK

Students guess whether statements about the US and the UK are true or false. A speaking activity using the grammar point, can.

Level:  Elementary

Topic:  Rules / Permission

Grammar:  Can

Time:  15 minutes


  • Make one copy of the Conversation Cards for each group, and cut as indicated. 
  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.



Ask the students to get into group of 4 or 5 people.


Give each group a set of Conversation Cards.


Ask the students to look at the cards and decide if the statements are true or false. Put the “true” cards in a pile and the “false” cards in a pile.


After the students finish, tell them that there are 4 cards that are false and 6 cards that are true. Allow time for the students to rearrange their cards.


Check the answers. Groups get one point for each card that is correct. The winner is the group with the most points.

Extended Practice

Ask the students to make rules about their country using can and can't.
