Jigsaw Speaking

Students summarize and tell a story. The listener retells the story to a third person. The third person retells the story to a fourth person.

Level:  Intermediate

Topic:  Speaking activities

Time:  75 minutes

Preparation

  • Prepare four articles, and write a letter at the top of each one: A, B, C, D.
  • Write the letters and titles of the articles on the board.

Procedure

1

Students get into 4 groups.

2

Assign each group a letter: A, B, C, D.

3

Give each group an article (e.g., group A receives article A, and so on).

4

Students read the article and write a summary on the handout.

5

Ask the students to retell the story in their groups without looking at the paper.

6

Collect the articles with the summaries.

7

Ask the students to stand up and get a partner from another group to tell the stories. Write the partners (pairing of letters) on the board to avoid confusion (See Notes at bottom).

8

Students go back to their original groups and discuss one of the articles together with their group.

Group A: Talk about D article.

Group B: Talk about C article.

Group C: Talk about B article.

Group D: Talk about A article.

9

Each group presents their new summary to the class. Other groups listen and correct any mistakes.
