Go Fish

Go Fish

Students play the card game, Go Fish, using health ailment cards with pictures and/or words.

Level:  Elementary

Topic:  Health

Time:  30 minutes

Preparation

  • Prepare 26 health ailment cards with pictures and/or words. Health flashcards can be found at MES-English: Free Printables for Teachers.
  • Make two copies of the health ailment cards. This makes one set of Go Fish cards.
  • Make one set of Go Fish cards for each group.

Procedure

1

Students get into groups of 4 or 5 people.

2

Give one set of Go Fish cards to each group. Students deal seven cards to each person in the group, and put the remaining cards in a pile face down.

3

The first person looks at his or her cards, and chooses a card to try to make a match. The student can ask anyone in the group for a matching card.

For example:

A:  Do you have a stomachache?  (Do you have the card labeled, stomachache?)

B:  Yes I do.  (Yes, I have the stomachache card)

Student B gives the stomachache card to student A. Student A puts the two cards down, and can go again.

-OR-

A:  Do you have a stomachache?  (Do you have the card labeled, stomachache?)

B:  No, I don’t. Go Fish!  (No, I don't have the stomachache card)

Student A takes one card from the pile of cards, and it is the next person’s turn.

4

The students’ task is to match all the cards in their hand. If a student has two matching cards, he or she can put them down.

5

The game finishes when a student has no remaining cards in his or her hand, or there are not any cards remaining in the pile. Students count their cards. The person with the most cards is the winner.
