Students work in pairs to complete a jigsaw crossword puzzle. A speaking activity using Christmas vocabulary.
Time: 20 minutes
- Make one copy of Handout A and Handout B for every two students.
Ask the students to get a partner.
Give each pair of students Handout A and Handout B. Ask the students to keep their paper a secret and to not show their partner.
Explain that Handout A has the clues and answers for the words that are going across, and Handout B has the clues and answers for the words that are going down.
The students’ task is to explain one word at a time to their partner without saying the word. Their partner must guess the correct word.
For example: #2 Down, The Colors of Christmas
Yuki: Number two down is the colors of Christmas.
Jim: Is it red and white?
Yuki: No, but red is one color. The other color is the same as a Christmas tree.
Jim: Oh, it’s red and green?
Yuki: Yes, that’s right.
Jim: OK, next is number one down…
Students take it in turns to explain the words to each other until both students have finished the crossword.
After the students have finished, they can exchange papers to check their answers.
