Reporting Verbs Activity

Reporting Verbs Activity

Students work in groups to change direct quotes into reported speech sentences using a list of reporting verbs. A speaking activity using reported speech.

Level:  Intermediate

Grammar:  Reported Speech

Time:  45 minutes

  • Make one copy of the Handout for each group.
  • Make one copy of the Key for the teacher.

Ask the students to get into groups of 4 or 5 people. Give each student a Handout.

Ask the students to listen to a direct quote (from the Key). Their task is to choose a reporting verb from the Handout and finish the sentence using reported speech.

For example:

Teacher: No, I will not call her. (Direct Quote)

Students: Ben refused to… call her. (Reported Speech)

The first group to raise their hand can try to answer. Correct sentences get one point.

Continue until all the sentences are finished. The winner is the group with the most points.

Extended Practice

Ask the students to complete the Handout with the correct sentences.
